Purpose of the Role

Retailer Brands is a leading FMCG manufacturer of high-quality dry goods and baking aids, dedicated to innovation, sustainability, and excellence in the food industry. Based in Johannesburg, South Africa, we pride ourselves on delivering premium products that meet the evolving needs of our clients while upholding the highest standards of safety and efficiency.

The Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) Officer is responsible for the implementation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of safety, health, and environmental programs at a site level. This role
ensures compliance with regulatory requirements and company policies while promoting a strong
safety culture. Reporting directly to the factory manager, your primary focus will be on implementing robust systems from the top down to the factory floor, with an emphasis on enhancing health and safety protocols, optimizing waste management, and cultivating a culture of safety for all employees.
This is a hands-on leadership role that requires strategic thinking, operational expertise, and a passion for fostering a positive, high-performance, safety conscious work environment in a fast-paced manufacturing setting.

Key Responsibilities

Risk Management Support

  • Identifying, assessing, and mitigating workplace hazards.
  • Conduct routine safety inspections and risk assessments.
  • Maintain hazard identification records and safety observation reports.
  • Provide input and support into the development of all onsite SOPs, with a specific focus on SHE requirements and standards.

Compliance Assistance

  • Ensure daily adherence to SHE regulations and internal policies.
  • Ensure all contractors and service providers comply with standards and policies.
  • Monitor and ensure the correct use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and safety procedures.
  • Develop and maintain SHE documentation and records (SOPs, risk assessments, permits, MSDS, etc.).
  • Conduct accident investigations when accidents occur to determine their causes.
  • Assist with annual Food Safety and SMETA Audits as well as risk and security aspects of Food Safety.

SHE Reporting & Monitoring

  • Track SHE performance metrics (near misses, incidents, environmental impact, etc.).
  • Generate reports on SHE trends and compliance status.
  • Ensure communication to floor is maintained

Safety Training & Awareness

  • Organize and deliver toolbox talks, safety drills, and employee training sessions.
  • Conduct new employee safety onboarding and refresher training.
  • Motivate, develop and coach employees.

Environmental Management Support

  • Monitor waste management.
  • Assist in implementing environmental protection initiatives (spill prevention, energy efficiency, etc.)

Cleaning

  • Lead the cleaning team.
  • Redesign the master cleaning program, creating detailed SOPs for cleaning teams, incorporating best practices for efficiency, safety, and compliance.
  • Ensure all activities align with FSSC 22000 requirements to achieve superior hygiene and operational outcomes.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Grade 12
  • National Diploma in Safety Management
  • 2-3 years of experience in the health and safety field, preferably in FMCG environment.
  • Advanced knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Regulations.
  • Strong understanding of risk assessments, hazard identification, and mitigation.
  • Experience in safety audits and inspections.
  • Experience in incident investigation and reporting.
  • Experience in system implementation, process optimisation, and workforce development.
  • Analytical and data-driven mindset with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; Syspro experience advantageous.
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and capable of independent decision-making.
