Reporting line: Divisional Manager
Location: Durban, KwaZulu-Natal
Role Overview:
The Regional Sales Manager is responsible for leading the sales function across the assigned region by managing Area Sales Managers, building strategic relationships with regional key players (including agents and retail partners), driving merchandising excellence, and ensuring seamless coordination of operational activities. This role is crucial in bridging field execution with head office strategic direction, with a particular emphasis on the Spar DC environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Team Management
- Allocate sales territories fairly across Area Sales Managers based on store counts and workload.
- Manage the leave planner and calendar for the regional sales team.
- Ensure active field time: minimum 2 days per week in trade with ASM’s, focusing on merchandising
standards, shelf execution, planograms, and flow adherence. - Facilitate 2-3 days of admin focus weekly, including DC focus days.
Agent Management
- Own and maintain professional relationships with all key agents: Vector, Daymon Engage, Proforce, and
one additional (if applicable). - Schedule and lead monthly data-driven meetings with each agency using Tools and insights.
- Track execution and follow-up of missed opportunities, gaps, and store-level priorities.
- Submit bi-weekly summarised execution reports to Sales Administrator and Divisional Manager.
Key Account and DC Management (Spar-Focused)
- Lead all Spar DC visits to inspect deliveries, check GRV status, and prevent claims.
- Visit Spar buyers as and when needed to assist in execution and follow through on agreements made by
the National KAM and buyer. - Check RSP accuracy in trade and inform National Key Account Manager price discrepancies
- EDI order communicate any discrepancies to DC and inform National Key Account Manager to ensure
pricing consistency across regions within 48 hours of order placement. - Deliver listing samples and address delivery/stock issues proactively.
- Submit regional deal sheets, manage order suggestions, and support KAM in buyer interactions.
- Management and feedback of Price Surveys
- Adress Short Dated stock issues in DC as and when is required.
Merchandising & Execution
- Drive store relays and layout implementation calendar: manage execution timelines, number of stores,
and responsible personnel. - Monitor and guide regional WhatsApp groups; ensure timely responses to opportunities or issues raised.
- Curate and manage weekly “brag” group images and achievements.
- Champion high merchandising standards through live feedback loops and training.
Claims, Documentation & Communication
- Handle claims related to pricing discrepancies, short deliveries, overs/unders, GRVs, and PODs.
- Ensure all relevant SLA documents, delivery notes, and related documents are communicated to relevant
parties post-delivery. - Respond timeously to quality queries from buyers via the Group Quality mailbox, and escalate concerns
to the relevant factory. - Responsibility for LW1 Forms and Reporting: Ensure accurate completion and timely submission of LW1
forms, with full accountability for tracking and maintaining alignment to agreed financial standards and
reporting protocols.
Reporting & Performance Management
Provide feedback to divisional leadership on execution of gap lists and focus reports.
- Track number of issues resolved versus those identified (by chain and per store).
- Identify and communicate missed opportunities and successes across all chains: Spar, Pick n Pay, and
Checkers. - FLM, OK, and Makro: Ensure consistent engagement with these key accounts across your region, in line
with national key account focus areas and weekly priorities. Actively manage your Area Sales Managers to
drive visibility and compliance in all stores. Hold Agents accountable to strict calling expectations and
ensure they maintain high standards of execution and in-store presence. Regularly review store coverage
and take corrective action where gaps are identified, ensuring our presence is always aligned with agreed
expectations.
Budget & Financial Management
- Manage the Region’s sales and merchandising budget, ensuring cost-effective operations while achieving revenue and profitability goals.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Relevant tertiary qualification
- Proven experience managing sales teams and external agents.
- Knowledge of retail operations (especially Spar, PnP, and Checkers).
- Strong understanding of merchandising principles, DC logistics, and promotional execution.
