Category Technologist (Groceries) – Ambassador Foods / Mpumalanga

Reporting to: Technical Manager

Location: White River, Mpumalanga

A Food Technology professional with a proven track record in the food industry focusing ensuring the quality, safety, and compliance of products within a specific category. They are involved in creating and maintaining product specifications, ensuring regulatory compliance, and overseeing product development. Essentially, they bridge the gap between product design, manufacturing, and quality control. Key performance areas include, but not limited to:

Product Specification Development

  • Develop and maintain detailed product specifications including raw materials, nutritional data, performance requirements, and packaging.
  • Ensure alignment with customer requirements, internal standards, and legal obligations.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure products comply with all applicable food laws and regulations (local and international).
  • Conduct risk assessments and food safety reviews; proactively implement updates based on legislative changes.

New Product Development (NPD)

  • Support the development of new and innovative products, from concept through to commercial launch.
  • Participate in feasibility analysis, product trials, and critical path management—especially for retailer own-label products.

Cross-functional Collaboration

  • Liaise with R&D, procurement, manufacturing, quality, and commercial teams to ensure seamless product rollout.
  • Work with external suppliers and partners to verify material compliance and quality standards.

Documentation Management

  • Maintain up-to-date technical documentation including specifications, test results, and compliance records.
  • Ensure documentation is audit-ready and accessible for internal and external stakeholders.

Requirements:

  • Grade 12 with a BTech in Food Technology or BSc in Food Science, Biotechnology, Microbiology, or related field.
  • 5–8 years’ experience in the food industry in a similar role, ideally covering quality assurance, product development, and regulatory compliance.
  • Strong experience in new product development, innovation, and critical path management, particularly in retailer own-label development.
  • Proven expertise in HACCP, VACCP, TACCP, and quality & food safety management systems.
  • Solid understanding of food legislation, technical specifications, and manufacturing processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams, manage technical projects, and deliver cross-functional collaboration.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
