Purpose of the role:
The Group Environment, Safety and Health (ESH) Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing the organization’s environmental, health, and safety strategies across all Business Units. This role ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, promotes a culture of safety, and drives continuous improvement in environmental and occupational health performance.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and execute the group-wide ESH strategy aligned with organizational goals.
- Provide leadership and direction to site-level ESH teams.
- Integrate a proactive safety-first culture across all operations.
- Support Business Units with ESH strategy and plans to support BU targets.
- Oversee compliance with all applicable environmental, health, and safety legislation and standards.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of regulatory changes and industry best practices.
- Identify, assess, and make proposals to mitigate environmental and occupational health and safety
- risks.
- Monitor and track incident investigations and check that root cause analysis are done through
- structured problem solving techniques and tools and oversee that preventive measures are
- implemented.
- Develop and maintain risk registers and emergency response plans for the Group.
- Conduct Internal Audits: design & drive a suitable programme of Safety, Health and Environmental systems audits.
- Communicate audit and investigation findings in an accurate, detailed and timely fashion and schedule follow-up audits to track that findings are closed out within the defined time period.
- OHS Act Surveys: on receipt of reports establish & implement action plans from the findings.
- Contractor ESH compliance: provide the guidelines and advise to the ESH aspects of the activities of contractors and sub-contractors on site
- Drive sustainability initiatives, including waste reduction, energy efficiency, and emissions control.
- Monitor environmental performance and adherence to environmental permits.
- Lead environmental impact assessments and sustainability initiatives.
- Manage ongoing organisational certification on compliance with environmental permits, licences, and authorisations for Environmental Management System requirements.
- Drive performance in: waste management, water usage and conservation, and air emissions and pollution control.
- Support ESG and sustainability reporting requirements.
- Design and implement ESH training programs for the Group and monitor adherence to the plan.
- Promote awareness and accountability for safety and environmental stewardship.
- Support ESH representatives across the Group in embedding ESH into daily operations.
- Training: define and roll-out Group training plan on inter alia; ESH Policy, ESH Awareness and Induction, ESH System, Significant Aspects/Impacts, ESH Representatives, Fire Fighting, First Aid, PPE,
- Incident Investigation.
- Emergency Preparedness: review emergency preparedness for the Group and response plans and implement an annual drill schedule to verify preparedness.
- Establish ESH Objectives and track ESH performance across the Group.
- Prepare reports for executive leadership and regulatory authorities by using data analytics to drive continuous improvement initiatives.
- Liaise with regulatory bodies, external auditors, and industry groups.
- Collaborate with internal departments (HR, Operations, Engineering) to integrate ESH practices.
- Represent the organization in ESH-related forums and initiatives.
Required Knowledge
- Expert knowledge of South African ESH legislation
- Understanding and implementing Environmental Management System Standards
- Proven experience implementing National, Provincial, Regional & Municipal legislation relating to ESH regulations.
- Knowledge of market trends related to the industry.
- Demonstrated knowledge and implementation of Group Safe Work Manuals and ESH Work Instructions.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Tertiary qualification required in Environmental Science, Safety Management, Engineering, or related field.
- NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent qualification (advantageous).
- Registration with a relevant professional body (e.g., SACPCMP or Saiosh) preferred.
- 8-10 years’ experience in a FMCG/manufacturing environment.
- 5-8 years’ experience in the FMCG industry.
- 3-5 years’ experience in senior or group-level leadership role.
- Proven experience managing multi-site operations.
- Ability to work on own initiative and have comprehensive stakeholder engagement experience.
- Problem solving, strong planning and organising experience required.
- Collaborative and proactive working style.
