Purpose of the Role

A vacancy exists at our food manufacturing facility in Montagu for a qualified Mechanical Maintenance Fitter with experience in maintenance on bottling equipment, canning equipment and processing equipment. Reporting to the site engineer, you will be responsible for the maintenance and repairing of equipment as determined by the maintenance system and according to safe work standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Ensuring that all facilities are structurally sound, mechanically operational, and safe
• Planning daily and weekly maintenance activities in coordination with the work management system and production schedule
• Ensuring all new installations are done according to requirements as set out by specifications and legislation
• Responsible for the work (as required) in the installation, operation, maintenance, modification and repair of heating, ventilation and air conditioning, plumbing, compressed air and refrigeration systems by inspecting and testing elements of those systems to locate and diagnose faults and malfunctions and rectifying any problems encountered
• Fault-finding and repair of breakdowns as they occur and report on any downtime
• Doing route cause analysis to eliminate or reduce problems and faults encountered
• Ensures completion of assigned maintenance and repair tasks on time at standard
• Ensures that auxiliary systems and equipment are in good working order and serviced on a regular basis as required by the maintenance management system
• Manage the monitoring of auxiliary systems and keep record of all daily readings
• Advising the site engineer regarding potential shortages, recommended replacement items, or related equipment needs
• Ensure that the site buildings and grounds are in good conditions
• Assist with machine safety audits and ensuring all equipment are safe for use
• Assist in the planning of projects and the executing thereof
• To update the maintenance management system daily
• Maintain a clean and safe working environment
• Report on daily activities at the end of each shift to the department head
• Manage waste in the maintenance department and improve on systems to reduce waste where possible

Qualifications, Skills & Experience

• Trade Tested Artisan with Mechanical Fitter qualification
• Minimum 5 years’ experience in a Mechanical Maintenance role
• Minimum 3 years’ experience in a food manufacturing facility
• Understanding of various component manufacturing equipment and machinery
• Electrical knowledge is advantageous
• Welding qualification advantageous
• Must be able to work shifts
• Basic computer literacy
